The emerging need for personalised medicine now requires biobanks to adapt their processes and to add more data to the biospecimens collected. Easy access to sample-associated data and a standardised way to record this data is paramount to a quality biobanking service. Data that can be collected varies from a few data points to hundreds of patient fields such as medical history, familial history, pathologies, treatments etc. The embedded MBioLIMS BioBanking eCRF Module allows our clients to manage a large amount of clinical data alongside sample data, with the ability to query the data in a combined way.
The eCRF form builder allows our clients the functionality to design their own eCRF forms to match their needs and replace paper-based or other questionnaires for different studies. In the latest version, the eCRF builder is fully integrated within MBioLIMS. Simple to use fields of different types such as text fields, drop-down menus, radio buttons, date fields etc. can all be added.
Clinical data can be entered into the MBioLIMS BioBanking® system using these designed forms. This means that any clinical data becomes available in searches with the advanced query function.
eCRF forms can have multiple sections in order to manage different types of clinical information. Fields can be mandatory, have a default value or be displayed based on a value entered in another field. This flow-logic between questions enables the user to only display the questions that need to be answered. It is also possible to define validation controls; calculate data using information from other fields and even assign a score for the completed questionnaire. The forms have different statuses: missing, partial, completed, to be verified (when a form has been updated). This allows a natural collection of data as it is received until the form is complete. With busy schedules and different ways to collect patient information, our eCRF forms have been designed to cope with each scenario. It is intuitive to use and time-saving for staff involved.
The RARENET* biobanking project aims to collect samples from patients affected by rare diseases such as Oligodontia, Lupus, Scleroderma and others. Each disease requires its own set of associated data and it is not conceivable to use a unique eCRF form for the different diseases studied, even though the collection process of samples is performed in the same way. MBioLIMS software allows Rarenet to have a single software with a single database that can combine the sample information with the disease-specific clinical information for those samples.
“The eCRF module is part of MBioLIMS BioBanking® software, an intuitive solution designed for biobanks, sample collection management and cohort projects. Clinical data associated with corresponding biospecimen information creates the option to efficiently select samples of interest and maximize sample value.” Hélène Merlin – Rarenet clinical Research Specialist.
