Scaling up an existing evaporation process sounds simple. But larger volumes also place different demands on the equipment.
This case involved an international chemical company that works with salt and brine. A brine solution is evaporated in the laboratory. This takes place about once a week.
The customer had been using a rotary evaporator with a 2-liter evaporation flask for this purpose. To process larger batches, there was a need for a system capable of handling 5 or 10 liters.
It wasn’t just the larger volume that was important. The properties of the brine solution and the use of coated glass also had to be considered in the configuration.
When discussing the options, it became clear that a larger evaporation flask is not automatically the best solution.
With brine, bumping and foaming can play a role. This can cause liquid to be carried toward the condenser or vacuum pump. Additionally, a less suitable glassware configuration can result in lower evaporation performance and a longer process time.
Therefore, in collaboration with the manufacturer, we explored a solution that is not only suitable for the current application but also takes future upscaling into account.
In addition to the laboratory solution, an industrial rotary evaporator was therefore considered. As a next step, a configuration with a 20-liter evaporation volume was specifically evaluated.
The choice of configuration was thus not based solely on the desired volume. Evaporation performance, condensation, and future scalability were also considered.
